September is Hunger Action Month with Feed Ontario and The Burlington Food Bank represents our City within this organization. As part of this educational initiative we wanted to let everyone know that about two-thirds of the people that receive food assistance from food banks across Ontario are actually on social assistance such as Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Programs. The biggest reason they need our help is due to the rising cost of housing. Affordable housing is in high demand. The families we talk to can’t make ends meet when the average cost of a small one bedroom home in Burlington right now goes for $1,500/month. Someone living off Ontario Works is getting a little over $700/mo. so even with a roommate splitting costs its still not near enough to survive. Please think about affordable housing and support when considering where to place your vote in the upcoming election and use your vote to promote action for those in need!

If you are in need or know of someone who could use our help, PLEASE have them email us at info@burlingtonfoodbank.ca or call 905-637-2273 to make arrangements to have food dropped at their door or make arrangements to pick it up through our curb-side pickup option. If you are a resident in Burlington, we are all here to help. Don’t struggle – give us a call.
